Sales of Minecraft game surpass 100 million

The makers of  Minecraft have announced that sales of the sandbox video game have surpassed 100 million since its launch in November 2011.

The game, which allows players to build constructions out of cubes in a 3D-generated world, was developed and published by Swedish-based firm Mojang together with Microsoft.

At the end of May 106,859,714 copies of the game had been sold, while there are an average of over 40m unique Minecraft players across all platforms every month.

Since the beginning of 2016, Minecraft has averaged daily sales of over 53,000 copies.

The average Minecraft player is aged 29, while nearly 40% of players are female.
