Housebuilder Abbey reports progress across all parts of its business

Shares in Abbey jumped today after shareholders at its AGM were told that trading in the early months of its fiscal year have been "encouraging".

The executive chairman of the housebuilders company, Charles H Gallagher, said that progress is being made across all parts of the business.

He said that sales in southern England have been strong in recent weeks due to the "keen" take-up of the UK government's "help to buy" scheme.

"In Ireland, our new development in Shankill, Co Dublin has been very well received with good forward sales," Mr Gallagher added.

He said that the group is on track for a good year if present trends continue.
