EU probes IBM over mainframe claims

European regulators are investigating computer giant IBM on two separate cases relating to competition infringements.

A statement from the European Commission said the cases related to alleged infringements of EU rules linked to the abuse of a dominant market position.

The charges relate to the firm's mainframe computer business - the huge computers used by governments and big companies to run large-scale operations.

They follow complaints about obstacles to the market by rival software makers T3 and Turbo Hercules, as well as commission concerns on IBM's relations with maintenance suppliers.
