Vodafone Ireland says it added 6,000 mobile customers in the three months to the end of June, bringing its mobile customer base to 2.15 million. When fixed line and broadband customers are included, the company had 2.35 million customers, an increase of 10,500 over the three months.
But the amount of money it made from customers - measured by average monthly revenue per user - fell by more than 9% to €35.10.
Meanwhile, the Vodafone group, the world's largest mobile operator, said it returned to growth in the first quarter of its financial year with a 1.1% rise in organic service revenue, helped by improvements in Germany, Britain and Turkey.
Vodafone said service revenue, which is seen as an important measure of its performance, was almost £10.6 billion, up 1.1%, compared with a 0.2% drop in the previous quarter. The performance shows a continuing improvement in the company's recent performance.
European service revenue was down by 1.7%, but this was better than the previous quarter and reflected an improvement in Germany and Britain due to growth in data services for accessing the internet. Total group revenues for the period were £11.26 billion.
'These are the first quarterly results to show service revenue growth since the global recession impacted,' chief executive Vittorio Colao said. He said Vodafone had achieved the results through a focus on data in European markets, and from strong growth in emerging markets.
