People queued in Belfast today to purchase the Apple iPad device which went on sale for the first time in Northern Ireland.

The iPad, which starts at £429 sterling, has sold a million units since its launch in America last month. It will not be available for sale in the Republic of Ireland until July.

The much-anticipated consumer gadget was launched on the US domestic market on April 3, but such was demand that the Californian firm was forced to delay deliveries to international consumers.

Customers in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland can look forward to seeing them in the shops before the end of the month.

Apple plans to launch the iPad in Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July.

The firm boasts that it has already sold more over one million iPads in the US and that customers have downloaded over 12 million software applications from its online store.
