Telecoms company Eircom has announced plans which it says will lead to improved broadband speeds for one million customers this year.
The company today launched 'Next Generation Broadband' (NGB). It said broadband speeds would move from a minimum of one megabyte to up to 8Mb for all customers in NGB areas, giving greater capacity to download content such as video.
Eircom said existing broadband customers on 1Mb, 3Mb and 7Mb would be upgraded for free as the new service was rolled out. NGB will initially be available in Dublin, before being extended to Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford by the end of the year.
There will be three products for consumers, starting from a basic package with a 10Gb download allowance. Usage over this will be charged at €2 per Gigabyte, but Eircom says there will be a monthly bill limit of €50.
