A group of MEPs will visit Limerick this year to ensure the €14.5m in European funding, being provided to help those who lost their jobs after the closure of Dell in Limerick, is properly serving the needs of workers.

The funding is from the EU's globalisation fund and can be spent on further education and retraining for up to 2,400 former Dell workers as well as others who had been working for companies that relied on Dell for business.

This evening in Strasbourg, Irish MEP Marian Harkin confirmed that one of the visits the globalisation fund working committee will undertake this year will be to Limerick to meet workers.

No date has been yet set for the visit but sources say it could happen within the next few months.

Committee members are hoping the visit will help them with decisions on future applications for the fund.
