A spokesperson for Boston Scientific in Galway has confirmed that staff have been told of plans to reduce the workforce of 3,000 by up to 175 positions.
The spokesperson said the medical devices company remained strongly committed to its operations in Ireland which were making a significant contribution to the organisation's global business.
Last year, Boston Scientific announced a €91m investment at the Galway plant, creating 45 jobs.
It also announced that it would close its plant in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, this year, with most manufacturing switching to Galway.
New jobs from Racing Post Irish move
The Racing Post has said it will create up to 25 jobs with the launch of an Irish edition of the daily racing and sports betting paper.
The company says the Irish Racing Post will combine the UK edition with additional content for Irish readers only. The Irish edition - in which it is investing €2m - will also carry separate weekly supplements covering bloodstock, point-to-pointing and GAA.
The Racing Post group of companies has been Irish-owned since October 2007, when it was bought by a group of investors in a deal led by Peter Crowley and Neill Hughes of FL Partners and chief executive Alan Byrne.
The new paper will be headed by managing director Anthony Brady and editor Jonathan Mullin, who will join the paper from RTE where he has been the Gaelic Games Correspondent.
