O2 became the biggest mobile phone billpay operator in the country in the second quarter, according to figures it released today.

The company said it picked up 11,444 new billpay customers in Q2, to bring its customer base to 662,604.

Conversely, the firm saw its prepay number dwindle by 5,351 in the same period.

But O2 said this was a vast improvement on the over 25,000 customers it lost in that market from January to March.

Text messaging continues to gain popularity with its customers, with 782 million texts sent in Q2. That is up from 750 million in the previous quarter and 540 million in the same quarter last year.

The average revenue per user was €39.76 per month, up 1.1% from the opening months of the year but down 7.9% on the same period in 2008.

Commenting on the figures, Paul Whelan, chief financial officer of Telefonica O2 Ireland, said mobile broadband is the key factor driving growth.

With that in mind, the company has launched a 'try before you buy' offer, which allows customers to borrow a mobile modem for a trial period of three days with no contractual obligations.
