The information technology company IBM is to create 100 jobs in Dublin, Cork and Galway as part of an IDA-supported investment.

The €25m investment will enable the IT giant to recruit software engineers to focus on designing software for business, called 'cloud computing software'.

Speaking at the announcement, the IDA's Barry O'Leary said the development was a very positive one for the Irish economy in the current environment.

Mr O'Leary also said additional support for jobs, including in the are of training, would be welcomed.

IBM announced last year that it was setting up Europe's first Cloud Computing Centre at its facility at Mulhuddart, in Co Dublin.

Cloud computing involves people using a shared infrastructure to access IT services and is driven by the growth in recent years of technologies like social networking and streaming media.

At the time, IBM said the centre would serve as a European hub to provide research and services to a number of satellite facilities to be built in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
