Eircom has named former Vodafone Ireland chief executive Paul Donovan as its new chief executive. He will take up the post on July 1.

The company has been without a permanent chief executive since Rex Comb stepped down earlier this year, though Cathal Magee has been acting chief executive.

Mr Donovan spent nine years with Vodafone, which included three years as head of Vodafone Ireland. Most recently he was Vodafone CEO for Central Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific.

Eircom chairman Ned Sullivan said Mr Donovan's vast industry experience and specific knowledge of the Irish market would be critical in leading the company through the challenges lying ahead.

Earlier this week, Eircom announced it had agreed a restructuring deal with union representatives which would result in 1,200 jobs being cut over the next two years.

The company's board also said last month it was confident of finding an alternative to the proposal from a group of Australian businessman to buy the company. The board is opposing an approach from a group of Australian businessmen, led by Rob Topfer, who was involved in the takeover of Eircom in 2006.
