Troubled US mobile phone maker Motorola has reported a wider quarterly net loss, adding that it expects further losses this quarter.

The company posted a net loss of $231m, or 13 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $194m during the same quarter a year ago. Revenue fell 28% to $5.4 billion.

Motorola said it expects a net loss of between three cents per share and five cents per share during the current quarter.

Motorola's mobile phone division reported an operating loss of $509m compared with $418m a year ago on 45% lower revenue of $1.8 billion. It said it shipped 14.7 million handsets during the quarter giving it a 6% share of the global handset market.

Motorola enjoyed success with its popular Razr phone launched in 2005 but has been losing ground since to Apple and Research in Motion as well as other mobile phone makers such as Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Motorola enjoyed a 17.5% share of the market two years ago.

Motorola's other activities fared better than its handset division. The home and networks division reported operating profits of $115m while enterprise solutions posted operating profits of $156m.
