Five new Science Foundation Ireland Strategic Research Clusters are being established with an investment of €23.9m. The new research scheme involves seven academic institutions, including NUIG, UCD, DCU and Waterford Institutue of Technology, and 22 companies.
The SRC programme was first introduced in 2007 to link scientists and engineers in partnerships across academia and industry. The programme addresses research questions, fosters the development of new and existing Irish based technology firms and helps to grow partnerships with industry.
'Science in a fiercely competitive arena, and it is increasingly clear that a country's economic fortunes are significantly dependent on its ability to conduct research that translates into economically-beneficial outcomes,' commented the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan today.
