Circulation lower at most newspapers

Newspaper circulation figures for the second half of 2008 show falls for most of the country's daily and Sunday newspapers compared with the same period in 2007.

The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) figures show that in the daily market, the Irish Independent still leads the way on 154,610, but this is down almost 4% on the same period a year earlier. The Irish Times fell by 3% to 115,462 and the Irish Examiner dropped 6% to 52,544.

In the Sunday newspaper market, the Sunday Independent's circulation was 270,362, down 4.3%, while the Sunday Tribune lost 4.8% to 66,672, though it was the only paper to show an increase from the first half of 2008.

The Sunday World was little changed at 285,214, but the Sunday Business Post gained just over 2% to 54,993.

The Evening Herald lost almost 8.7% compared with a year earlier to 74,927, while Cork's Evening Echo fell 5.3% to 24,522.

The ABC report also provided figures for a number of websites, which showed rte.ie with just under 2.4 million unique users, followed by independent.ie with 1.8 million and boards.ie with 1.7 million. Daft.ie, eircom.net and ireland.com all recorded more than a million unique users.
