A new survey shows that internet usage has increased from 58% in the second quarter of last year to 63% in the last three months of 2008.

The Commission for Communications Regulation's second residential survey of information and communications technology for 2008 also shows computer ownership has increased slightly with 56% of respondents either owning a PC or laptop, while 11% own both.

The survey also reveals that the average monthly spend on mobile phones has decreased from €45.64 to €41.64.

Satellite is the main means of access to television programmes with 46% of respondents using this method, while 29% use cable and 14% use free to air.

ComReg says that nearly 22 hours a week are spent using technology for leisure purposes, while 82% of survey respondents believe that technology has improved their quality of life.
