There is speculation in Limerick that the chief executive of computer maker Dell will travel to Limerick tomorrow.
Dell is the biggest employer in the Limerick area, and there have been fears for jobs since the company announced plans to review its manufacturing operations in a bid to cut costs.
There is also speculation that the company will tell the Government of its decision tomorrow, though the company will not confirm any of this information.
Dell currently employs 3,000 at its giant plant at the Raheen industrial estate. Around 2,000 of those are in manufacturing, the remainder in engineering services and manufacturing support.
Outsourcing of its manufacturing is expected to be one of the consequences of Dell's review, and that would hit the Limerick plant badly. An announcement is expected this week.
Speaking on RTE radio earlier, IDA Ireland chief Barry O'Leary said he understood Dell would soon be making a decision on its global review of manufacturing costs. Earlier it was reported that industry sources expect that Dell will reduce its workforce in Limerick from about 3,000 to between 750 to 1,200.
