There has been a dip in the number of people buying goods and services over the internet.

A new report from the Net Behaviour company says the overall quantity of purchases here has dropped by 2% since last year, with a 5% fall in the number of DVDs and flights being bought online.

RTÉ.ie is Ireland's second busiest website, after Google, with the Aer Lingus and Ryanair sites ranked third and fourth respectively.

The RTÉ site is the most popular among users looking for business, sport and entertainment stories. It is also the favoured stop for Irish people who want to view television content online.

RTÉ.ie/business and Independent.ie/business are joint leaders in the online business news sector with a market share of 6% each.

Net Behaviour says the growing number of people using the RTÉ service indicates a shift towards sites with enhanced features like podcasts, videos and blogging.

eBay and Amazon are the favourite shopping sites for Irish consumers, with a combined market share of more than 50%. Online information provider, Wikipedia is more popular than any of the country's newspaper, property or social networking sites.

The study shows that 40% of Irish internet users are between 25 and 44 years of age. People aged over 55 account for 27% of usage.
