Broadband - New ComReg report shows progress

New figures from telecoms regulator ComReg show that the total number of broadband subscribers - including mobile broadband - stood at 1,054,920 at the end of June. This was a 6.4% increase from the first quarter of the year.

Excluding mobile broadband subscribers, the number stood at 832,590.

In its quarterly report on the Irish electronic communications market, ComReg said it estimates that broadband penetration, including mobile broadband, stood at 24.3% by the end of the second quarter. When mobile penetration is excluded, the penetration rate was 19.2%.

Today's figures also reveal that mobile phone penetration stood at 120% at the end of the June quarter with mobile subscriptions increasing by 56,000 in the three months from April to June.

ComReg says that people spent more time on mobile phones than on fixed line phones in the second quarter. Mobile voice traffic totalled over 2.8 billion minutes compared to a figure of 2.32 billion minutes for fixed line minutes.
