IBM is to set up a new Dublin-based centre to carry out research on water management. IDA Ireland is backing the project.
IBM said the facility would focus mainly on research and services for monitoring, managing and forecasting environmental challenges such as the movement of pollutants in fresh water, marine and oceanic environments.
One of the centre's first projects is a collaboration with the Marine Institute on its national research SmartBay project, which is under development at Galway Bay.
SmartBay is a system of sensors, robotic equipment and computation technology for monitoring and managing data such as tidal flow, wave heights and temperature.
IBM's centre will also foster collaboration between businesses, Government agencies and third-level institutions to improve water quality and water system performance.
