There were more than five million mobile phone subscriptions in the State at the end of last year, according to the latest report from the communications regulator. ComReg said this represented 116% of the population.
Its latest quarterly report also showed that mobile phone calls account for just over half of all voice traffic, with the volume of fixed line calls falling by 4% over the year.
The total number of broadband subscribers was 886,300, up 11.7% on the previous three months, though the figure was 758,800 when mobile broadband was excluded. Broadband penetration of the population was 20.5% with mobile, and 17.6% without. Mobile broadband was the fastest growing category, up 44% from Q3. Of the 1.2 million internet subscriptions, only 27% use dial-up internet.
At the end of 2007, there was almost 841,000 digital television subscriptions, up 2.4% from the previous three months.
