Independent News & Media has signed contracts to acquire The Sligo Champion after completing its examination of the company's books. The acquisition is subject to approval from the Competition Authority.
INM agreed to buy the newspaper late last year for a sum believed to be in excess of €20m.
The Sligo Champion was founded in 1836 and has a circulation of about 13,000. It is owned by the Townsend family and is a market leader in Sligo. It is also popular in counties Leitrim, Donegal and Roscommon.
