Denis O'Brien's Caribbean mobile phone company Digicel has launched operations in the South American country of Suriname, its 23rd operation in the area.
Digicel has invested $60m in building a network that offers coverage to many communities in Suriname for the first time ever. With a population of almost 500,000 Suriname's mobile penetration is estimated at just over 55%.
Digicel's investment in the Caribbean and the Central American region exceeds $1.5 billion. It currently has over 5.7 million customers and directly employs 3,500 people.
