Irish payments group Alphyra has announced a merger with Cardpoint, the UK's leading independent ATM company.

The companies did not disclose the value of the deal, but it is believed to be worth up to €800m.

Alphyra operates payment systems such as electronic top-up and credit card processing for retailers, while Cardpoint operates around 6,000 cash machines throughout the UK and Germany.

The merged company, called Payzone, will be headquartered in Ireland and listed on London's AIM market.

After the merger, Payzone will be 59% owned by Alphyra shareholders - mainly its management team and Balderton Capital. Alphyra chief John Nagle will be chief executive of the new company.

The deal is subject to approval by Cardpoint shareholders.
