Mobile phone maker Motorola last night announced plans to cut another 4,000 jobs next year, adding that its previous plan to cut of 3,500 would be completed by the end of June.

The company said the new job losses were part of a cost-cutting programme aimed at saving $600m a year.

Motorola expects to record additional restructuring charges of around $300m over the rest of this year in connection with the plans.

Last month, the world's second-biggest mobile phone maker suffered a big slump in profits due to weak handset sales. Motorola posted a first-quarter loss of $181m compared with a year-earlier profit of $686m.

Earlier this year Motorola's withdrawal from engineering activities at its Cork plant led to the loss of more than 300 jobs. The latest round of cuts are unlikely to have any effect on the company's remaining Irish workforce, which numbers around 20.
