The majority of Eircom's telephone exchanges will have been modified to allow them deliver broadband services in two years' time.
This will bring to 900 the number of Eircom's 1100 exchanges able to offer broadband.
Consumer lobby group Ireland Offline says the move, which will make broadband available to 140,000 more homes and businesses, will bring Ireland further up broadband league tables.
Eircom says it is signing up 5,000 customers a week and estimates that the broadband penetration rate is now 14% in Ireland.
A study published last week by the European Commission, using figures for 2006, showed broadband penetration here at just over 10%. The EU average is just over 15%.
Meanwhile, Dublin-based Ice Broadband has today launched a new offer that includes unlimited free local, national and international calls with broadband services for €49.99.
The deal is available in regional and urban areas.
Chairman, Fran Rooney, says although many consumers have been using the Skype international service connected to their computers for some time, the company's research has shown that many are fed up with setting up the Skype link each time and would prefer to use their normal phone handsets.
