ComReg, the communications regulator, has announced the green light for mobile operators to start offering services in the vicinity of customer' homes for the same prices as fixed-line calls.
ComReg said the decision to allow the new 'home-zonal' service, which follows a consultation with interested parties, comes with the condition that mobile customers can receive and make calls on their mobiles at fixed-line costs - while they are in or near their homes.
ComReg said it is also supporting changes to geographic number portability so that existing fixed-line customers will be able to move their telephone numbers entirely to mobile operators for this specific home-zonal service.
ComReg said the new service will benefit customers by offering greater flexibility and lower priced calls.
