US software group VMare is to create 369 jobs in its technical support centre in Ballincollig, Cork.

The jobs will be for graduate and post-graduate engineers, specialising in software and languages.

The company's customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will be serviced from the centre in Cork.

VMware announced it was establishing its EMEA technical support centre in Ballincollig last year. It promised 78 jobs at that stage.

However, business has been growing so rapidly that VMware announced an additional 369 jobs today, which will bring total employment by the company in Ballincollig to just under 450.

A company spokesman said the expansion was logical because VMware's initial experience in Ireland had been so good. The expansion will allow the company to extend its services to include finance, information technology, human resources and sales.

VMware is owned by the Massachusetts-based  data storage and software company EMC, which already employs 1,400 people in Cork and Dublin. The expansion at Ballincollig is being supported by the IDA.
