IBM agrees to buy Vallent

Computer giant IBM today said it has agreed to buy Vallent Corporation for an undisclosed sum.

Vallent is a privately held company that provides networking monitoring software to wireless service providers such as Lucent, Motorola, China Mobile and Brazil Telecom. It has regional headquarters in Cork and Galway.

IBM said the deal combines two growth areas - its Tivoli service management unit, which saw a 44% revenue growth in the last quarter, and the telecommunications management software division, which is a growing $8.5 billion market.

It adds that the acquisition further strengthens the company's service management portfolio, which helps companies automate and simplify the way they manage IT.
