Not enough being done on roaming charges - EU

The European Commission says not enough is being done to reduce roaming charges for mobile phone users.

The statement follows a new Commission survey, which shows huge support for EU action to force phone companies to drop their costs.

The report finds that 78% of Irish people use their mobiles less while abroad, because of high roaming charges. There is also a huge lack of information about the fees with two thirds of mobile users saying they have no idea about the cost of making or taking calls when they are away from home.

The study says a four minute call costs and average of between €4 and €6, but in some cases the charges can be as high as €12.

The Commission has repeatedly asked mobile companies to cut roaming charges and has indicated it will step in to enforce reductions if the service providers do not act.

Over 70% of those surveyed say they would support EU intervention to drive down call costs.

In response the 3 Group says retail rates for international roaming are high as the direct result of the 'unjustifiably' high level of wholesale international roaming rates, which should not exceed €0.25 per minute.
