The European Commission has proposed strengthening national broadband strategies in the EU. These new strategies would set clear targets, reflect regional needs and make good use of EU and national funding in less developed and rural areas.
Chambers Ireland has welcomed the Commission's 'broadband for all' initiative which will mobilise telecoms legislation and structural and rural policy to stimulate broadband access across Europe.
Chambers Ireland said its recent SME e-business survey showed that just 29% of companies had broadband enabled connections and the lack of availability of service in their area was the principal reason that companies failed to upgrade their connection.
