Vodafone Ireland is scrapping roaming charges for all Vodafone Ireland bill paying customers travelling to Northern Ireland and the UK from March 14. The company says that its pre-paid customers will also see a 'massive' reduction to their call connection charges.
Vodafone Ireland says the cost will be the same as local rates for all its bill paying customers when they use their phone in the North or in the UK on the Vodafone network.
Last month O2 said all its customers - both bill pay and pre-pay - would not be charged for calls they receive while in the North from April. Roaming charges across the UK and Ireland are also being scrapped for their business customers.
The Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, had warned mobile phone companies that they could lose out on business if they did not take action on roaming charges.
Vodafone also said that its Northern Ireland division is working on proposals that will further improve roaming for customers based in the North. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks, the company said.
