Newspaper circulation figures for the second six months of 2005 were released today by the audit bureau of circulation in its ABC Island of Ireland report.
The Irish Independent led the way in the daily market with an average of 163,598. No yearly comparison was given as the broadsheet and compact editions were calculated separately in the same report a year earlier. The Irish Times was up 2.5% on the same period a year earlier at 117,370. The Irish Examiner was up marginally at 59,070.
In the Sunday market, Ireland on Sunday and the Sunday Tribune showed sharp falls - down 11.6% and 10% respectively. Ireland on Sunday's circulation was 127,399, while the Sunday Tribune's was 71,808. The Sunday Independent fell 1.6% to 286,613, but the Sunday Business Post was up nearly 6% to 51,500. The Sunday World dropped slightly to 272,304.
The Evening Herald lost 3% to 85,506, and Cork's Evening Echo fell 5% to 26,496. In the Dublin freesheet market, Herald AM recorded 63,077, compared with Metro Ireland's 54,547.
