Vodafone is to set up a new 'centre of excellence' in Dublin which will work on the development of new products and services for the mobile group.

The group's Irish division was chosen to host the centre after an internal competitive tendering process. The project, which is being backed by IDA Ireland, will initially employ 25 people.

Vodafone said a number of Irish companies had already been working with it on the introduction of new products. The Irish centre will focus on the areas of personalisation and storage.

'Ireland now also has a real opportunity to establish itself as a key player in creating the mobile technology products and services of the future,' said Vodafone Ireland CEO Teresa Elder.

Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheal Martin said the move would help develop 'a dynamic wireless cluster' in Ireland.
