Yahoo's 2005 net profits doubled

US Internet portal Yahoo said last night that its fourth-quarter gross profit rose 34% from the same period a year earlier to $928m.

Yahoo's operating income for 2005 was up 61% from the previous year to $1.1 billion. Gross profit for 2005 rose 42% to $3.2 billion.

Revenues for 2005 totalled $5.3billion, a 47% increase over the previous year. Net income for 2005 more than doubled from 2004 to just under $2 billion.

Adjusted net income for the final quarter of 2005 was $247m, slightly below expectations.

Yahoo's spike in earnings came during a year in which rival internet portals battled to be the preferred choice of computer users, whose visits to the sites can be converted into advertising revenue.
