Science Foundation Ireland says it invested a record €122m this year in funding scientific and engineering research in third level academic institutions in Ireland.
It says more than €520m has now been committed to over 780 projects since SFI was set up in 2001.
Among the biggest beneficiaries in 2005 were the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at Dublin City University, which received €16.5m, and the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre (ISERC) based at University of Limerick, which received €11.7m.
