BSkyB hits UK subscriber target

British satellite broadcaster BSkyB today said that it has passed its long-standing goal of eight million subscribers.

BSkyB, the biggest satellite broadcaster in Europe, aims to reach 10 million direct-to-home subscribers by 2010, with 25% watching via Sky Plus, which allows customers to pause live television and record one satellite programme while viewing another.

'Sky is achieving strong growth,' CEO James Murdoch said in a statement this morning.

BSkyB also announced that its £211m sterling cash takeover of telecoms firm Easynet, announced in October, has been declared unconditional but will remain open until further notice.
