The chairman of Intel, the world's largest chip maker, says the company plans to invest more than $1 billion to expand in India in the next five years.

The company plans to invest $800m in operations in the next five years and set up a $250m venture capital fund in the country, the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted Intel chairman Craig Barrett as saying.

The $800m investment will be focused on Intel's research and development centre in the southern technology hub of Bangalore, with other spending planned on marketing, education and community programmes, Barrett said.

Intel has invested $700m in India over the past decade, a period during which technology firms have rushed into the country to take advantage of its low-cost, highly-skilled work force.
