PC maker Dell said last night that its third-quarter profit fell 28% because of restructuring costs, but revenues improved on higher sales of servers and storage equipment.

Dell said it earned $606m in the quarter ended October 28, down from $846m a year ago. Excluding $442m in once-off charges, Dell said it earned 39 cents a share, in line with a reduced forecast it issued on October 31.

Revenue rose to $13.9 billion, up 11% on the same period a year earlier but slightly below analysts;' forecasts.

Analysts had cut their sales and earnings forecasts earlier this month in the wake of Dell's lowered forecast, which the firm blamed on weaker than expected sales in its US consumer and British business customer areas.

Dell, the top maker of PCs, said sales of its storage products rose 3% from a year ago, while server revenue increased 16%.

Dell employs around 4,000 people in Ireland.
