Newspaper circulation figures released today show a sharp rise for the Irish Independent's daily compact edition in the first half of this year.
The ABC Island of Ireland report shows that compact circulation rose by 56.5% compared with the same period last year to 81,431. But the paper's broadsheet edition dropped 36% to 82,771. This meant the paper's total circulation showed a decline. There was a 1.3% rise for the Irish Times, bringing it to 117,543, while the Irish Examiner dropped marginally to 57,331.
In the Sunday newspaper market, the Sunday Tribune's circulation fell by 18% over the year to 71,187, while Ireland on Sunday dropped 8.4% to 139,170. Sunday Independent circulation was almost unchanged at just over 291,000, while the Sunday World's circulation in the Republic was also flat at 206,704. The Sunday Business Post was down slightly to 51,823, but it showed a 6.5% rise compared with the previous six months.
Evening Herald circulation was up 1.4% to 93,830, while Cork's Evening Echo lost 2% to 27,714.
