Vodafone Ireland is to create 100 new jobs by setting up a call centre for its international customers at its headquarters in Leopardstown in south Dublin.

The announcement was made as the company reported that its customer base had grown by 88,000 to 1,952,000 in the year to the end of March.

The figures also show that Vodafone Ireland made an average of €608 from each Irish customer, up from €582 last year. This compares with €209 in the company's German business and £306 sterling in the UK.

The company says higher usage outweighed price reductions, adding that the amount of time spent by Irish customers on mobile phones was the highest of all its businesses.

Meanwhile, the parent company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of £13 billion, up 3% on the previous year and ahead of expectations. Pre-tax losses were reduced by 7% to £4.7 billion.

There was good news for shareholders, with the company announcing that it was doubling its dividend to 4p per share. It also said it would buy back shares worth £4.5 billion.

But a warning of a possible drop in profit margins for the year ahead sent the shares down almost 5% to 140 pence.

Vodafone Group added 16 million customers during the year, bringing its total to just under 155 million worldwide.
