French telecoms equipment maker Alcatel has agreed to a link with chip maker Intel to develop and market the WiMAX high-speed wireless internet access technology to telecoms operators.
The first tests of the technology under the agreement are scheduled for the first half of 2006, with a launch pencilled in for mid-2006, Alcatel said at the 3GSM World Congress in France.
Alcatel said the joint development agreement expanded their strategic alliance on WiMAX, an emerging set of standards aimed at providing broadband access over wireless networks.
The new technology will employ user devices based on Intel's next-generation chipsets and these WiMAX networks will support the first Intel Centrino mobile technology-based lap-tops.
