The Daily Ireland joins crowded NI market

A new daily newspaper has been launched in Belfast. 'The Daily Ireland' is part of the Andersonstown News Group.

The paper says it will support the peace process and Irish unity and is aimed at a nationalist readership in the North and border counties of the Republic.

The newspaper has a staff of 40, some of whom will be based in Co Monaghan.

The new paper, which had to drop its original working title Ireland Today after a legal challenge from Rupert Murdoch's News International which owns the 'Today' trademark, is entering a crowded marketplace. At least 17 daily newspapers were already available in Northern Ireland, with all the Irish and British national papers - some with local editions - on sale alongside three Belfast-based titles.

The paper in most direct competition with Daily Ireland is the Irish News.
