Sharp rise as camera phones snapped up

Japanese electronics maker Sharp has recorded record sales and profits in the nine months to December on continued robust demand for liquid crystal display televisions and camera phones, despite slower exports.

Group net profit rose 32% to a record $584m in the nine-month period. Sales were 14% higher.

The results were the highest since the company began releasing quarterly results in the year to March 2003.

As widely expected, Sharp left its earnings forecasts unchanged for the current year to March 2005.
