Sun Microsystems, which employs 160 at the company's strategic software development centre in Dublin, has reported that revenues for its second quarter, ending December 26, 2004, were down 1.6% to $2.843 billion from the same time the previous year.
Net profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2005 was $19m, or one cent per share, as compared with a net loss of $125m, or a net loss of four cents per share for the second quarter of fiscal 2004.
This latest quarter profit includes a charge of $24m for previously announced workforce and real estate restructuring, a $9m gain on equity investments, and a $6m benefit for related tax effects.
During the quarter, Sun Microsystems Ireland announced an agreement with the Localisation Resource Centre of the University of Limerick to establish a Sun Localisation Laboratory there.
Sun Microsystems will supply the Localisation Resource Centre with advanced hardware and software allowing it to establish a facility which will be used for research, teaching and practical work on leading SUN and Open Source software platforms.
This is the first time that a major corporation specialising in this area has become involved with an Irish academic institution to establish a Localisation Laboratory.
