Computer company Dell is to create 420 jobs in its new business campus in Cherrywood in Dublin. The move is being backed by IDA Ireland.

Sales and marketing workers now based in Bray in County Wicklow will join existing staff in Cherrywood.

The transfer of staff will begin in May or June next year and will bring the total number of staff employed in the Cherrywood campus to 1,650.

The consolidated site will become Dell's European, Middle East and Africa business centre. The new building  - currently under construction - will be linked to Dell's existing building at Cherrywood.

Dell currently employs around 4,000 people in Ireland, and has its European manufacturing operation in Limerick.

Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheal Martin described the move as 'a substantial deepening' of the Irish operation's role in Dell's business.

The Bray & District Chamber of Commerce described the news as a blow to the town. President David Tew said, however, that the body was pleased that Dell would be maintaining existing service contracts in the town.
