New research released to coincide with the launch of the 'Make IT Secure' campaign shows that 55% of home PCs have been infected by a computer virus or worm.
Communications Minister Noel Dempsey said it was 'worrying' that 51% of people did not know when they had updated their anti-virus software or had not done it for more than three months.
The research, carried out by Symantec, also found a low level of understanding of some common security terms.
'Make IT Secure' is a nationwide information and awareness campaign which aims to inform all computer users, in the home and workplace, about how to get secure and stay secure.
A public/private consortium has been formed to promote 'Make It Secure' and to help address the growing problem of computer viruses and worms.
The consortium includes the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Microsoft, Eircom, HP, Dell, Symantec, Esat BT, Ward Solutions and the Information Society Commission. RTE also supports the initiative as a brand partner.
