Communications regulator ComReg is proposing a cut in the price of Local Loop Unbundling line share.
In a consultation paper, it suggests a drop in the price from €9 to 39 cent. This would be the price charged by Eircom to other operators for use of a customer's line to provide broadband services.
Under LLU line share, other operators would not take control of the whole line as Eircom would continue to provide voice services.
The regulator is inviting responses to the consultation paper by December 3.
Damien Mulley, chairman of internet pressure group IrelandOffline, described the move as 'a small step in the right direction', but called for bigger steps, including simplifying the LLU pricing structure.
