Smart losses double in first half

Pre-tax losses at Smart Telecom more than doubled to €4.4m in the first half of this year, but turnover jumped by 61% compared with the same period last year to €9m.

The company, which recently floated on London's AIM, said it had increased its Irish residential customer base to 50,000 from just 3,000 at the start of last year.

In May, Smart launched wholesale line rental in the Irish market, removing the need for its customers to receive a bill from Eircom.

The company says it is now investing in improving its network, and is also rolling out broadband offerings.
