Compact a boost for Indo figures

The introduction of the Irish Independent's new compact format appears to have reversed a slide in its total daily circulation, according to the latest figures covering the first six months of this year.

The ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures show that for the broadsheet version of the paper, circulation was 129,035, with just over 52,000 for the compact version, giving a total of just over 181,000.

This is up more than 12% from a total of 161,297 in the previous six months. The compact version was launched in February this year.

The Irish Times also showed a slight rise, up 0.4% to 116,009 compared with the previous six months. The Irish Examiner was down 3% at 57,609.

In the Sunday market, the Sunday Independent still leads the way on 291,926, but this is down marginally on the previous six months.

After a period of rapid growth, Ireland on Sunday circulation fell by more than 5% to 151,899. Its circulation is down nearly 10% over the past year.

There were increases for the Sunday Business Post and Sunday Tribune - up 6% to 52,115 and 4% to 87,026 respectively. The Sunday World dropped 6% to 206,010.

In the evening market, the Evening Herald fell nearly 4% to 92,510, but the Cork Evening Echo added 2% to 28,341.
