US company Altera Corporation is to create up to 60 new jobs as it sets up its European Shared Services Centre at Cork Airport Business Park. The project is supported by IDA Ireland. The jobs will come on stream over the next five years.

Altera makes programmable logic devices, which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the semiconductor industry.

The company is establishing the centre in Cork to centralise a number of key functions at one location in order to achieve greater efficiencies. These functions include management of the complex network of European distributors, product pricing, contract negotiations and financial shared services.

Europe accounts for about 25% of Altera's worldwide sales. Its European headquarters will remain in the UK.

'This decision is an important recognition of Ireland's continuing ability to be a cost effective base and a leading location for such strategic high-level support services centres,' commented Tanaiste Mary Harney at today's announcement in Cork.

Altera employs about 2,000 worldwide.
